Fabric is a great tool for remote execution across a number of hosts equipped with nothing more than an accessible ssh port. We at 8 ions use it frequently for bootstrapping our orchestration and management environments on nodes that do not include the requisite tools and packages to run other configuration management and orchestration utilities such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, and SaltStack.
In meeting the needs of our various clients we've developed a number of extensions to Fabric and its contributed modules that increase it's utility in managing non-GNU/Linux systems. We've focused on getting the maximum functionality out of standards based environment components then extended that to features common across multiple platforms such as IllumOS, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, DragonFlyBSD, Solaris, HP-UX, QNX, and Minix3.
